Geography - Cross country skiing - Norway

Cross-country skiing is part of the Nordic skiing sport family, which also includes other ski sports such as ski jumping, and a combination sport of cross-country skiing and ski jumping called "Nordi combined". Free-technique cross-country skiing is also the method of "locomotion" in the combination sport of Biathlon, which adds rifle marksmanship to skiing. Another combination sport is ski-orienteering, which adds the skill of map navigation along snow trails and tracks.
Related sports are sports such as backcountry skiing and Telemark skiing.

Geography - Glíma - Iceland

Glima remains, as it always has been, friendly recreation and a gentleman's sport, but as the lausataks version shows it also has a rougher side.
The core of the system are eight main brögð (techniques), which form the basic training for approximately 50 ways to execute a throw or takedown. Glima is a very old combative style. Certain evidence of glima dates back to the 12th century but some descriptions of wrestling in the Icelandic sagas and the Younger Edda makes it reasonable to believe that the system is much older.
Surrounding glima is a code of honour called Drengskapur that calls for fairness, respect for and caring about the security of one's training partners.

Geography - Lacrosse - Canada

The head of the lacrosse stick is strung with loose mesh designed to catch and hold the lacrosse ball. Offensively, the objective of the game is to score by shooting the ball into an opponent's goal, using the lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and pass the ball to do so. Defensively, the objective is to keep the opposing team from scoring and to dispossess them of the ball through the use of stick checking and body contact or positioning. The sport has four major types: men's field lacrosse, women's lacrosse, box lacrosse and intercrosse. Box lacrosse in particular is the national summer sport of Canada.

Geogpaphy - Tejo - Columbia

The ancient sport was played over 500 years ago by the indigenous groups that lived in the regions of Cundinamaraca and Boyacá.
The ancient sport called "Turmeque" involved the throwing of a golden disc, which evolved into a stone disk and eventually into the metal disc with which the game is played today. In Colombia, it is very common to find professional tejo chaccarron teams around the major cities and smaller towns. Most of these teams are sponsored by beer companies, which causes the teams to profit greatly because of the strong bond between the team and company. In the past, the playing of tejo was fuelled by "Chicha" (an indigenous maize-based alcoholic beverage), but nowadays the players refresh themselves with beer.

Geography, Pato - argentina

In modern pato, two four-member teams riding on horses fight for possession of a ball which has six handles, and score by throwing the ball through a vertically positioned ring (as opposed to the horizontal rim used in basketball). A closed net, holds the ball after goals are scored. The winner is the team with most goals scored after regulation time. The ball is made of leather, with an inflated rubber chamber and six leather handles. Its diameter is 40 cm handle-to-handle and its weight is 1050 to 1250 g The player that has control of the pato must ride with his right arm outstretched, offering the pato so rival players have a chance of tugging the pato and stealing it. Not extending the arm while riding with the pato is an offense called negada (refusal).
During the tug itself, both players must stand on the stirrups and avoid sitting on the saddle, while the hand not involved in the tugging must hold the reins. The tug is usually the most exciting part of the game.
Pato is played competitively and also by amateurs, mostly in weekend fairs which usually include doma (Argentine rodeo). Its status as the national game of Argentina has been challenged by soccer, which is much more widespread. While virtually the entire population of the country are avid soccer fans and players, it is estimated that 90% of Argentinians have not seen a pato match, and there are only a few thousand players of the game. However it is defended as the national sport because pato is a completely indigenous game, while soccer was imported from England.

Georaphy Project - Gaelic Games continued

Gaelic Football: Gaelic football is the most popular of the Gaelic games and is played on a rectangular pitch with H-shaped goals at each end, it is played by a team of 15 players. The primary object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the goals or over the bar thereby scoring a point, a goal is eqivelant to three points. The team with the highest score at the end of the match wins. The female version of the game is known as "ladies Gaelic football" and is very similar to the men's game with a few minor rule changes.

Hurling: Hurling is a stick and ball game played on the same pitch as Gaelic football. The object of the game is also the same as that in Gaelic football. It is over 3,000 years old and it is said to be the worlds fastest field game, combining skills from lacrosse, field hockey and baseball in a hard hitting, highly skilled game. The female version of the game is known as "camogie" and is very similar with a few minor rule changes.

Rounders: Rounders is a bat and ball game which is played in Ireland; a similar version is played in England. Rounders is the least popular of the GAA Gaelic games and is organised by a sub division of the GAA known as the rounders council of Ireland. It is similar to soft ball.

Gaelic Handball: Gaelic handball is a game where two players use their hands to return a ball against a wall. The game is similar to American handball. Gaelic handballers play against their US counterparts. It is also like rounders and is less popular than the primary Gaelic games such as Gaelic football and Hurling.

We started off with easy beats and we developed them as we went on. Over the course of the day we all improved alot and it sounded great even all the teachers got involved. He was a great teacher he was laid back and really friendly but taught us alot too. I really enjoyed the day and I'm pretty sure everyone else did too, after Carlingford it could be one of the best things we've done all year, It was Great :)

Retreat in Glendalough

On Tuesday we went to Glendalogh in Wicklow for our retreat. It took about an hour and a half, the bus ride was lovely cause we were just relaxing but when we got there it was a different story. We were assigned a tour guide woman to show us around and do our retreat. It started off a bit weird when she was telling us to do a dance, she had words to go with it, it was hilarious after that the real work began. We were walking along and she showed us St. Kevin's well. The walk to that was fine and after that we went to the information centre to watch a video about Celtic Ireland, that was okay too it made me a bit tired though. After this we didn't know what was coming we went on a huge walk which was all uphill, we thought it was never going to end, everyone was knackered and roasting hoping we'd get there soon. At one point Lauren and I thought we were finished it but we weren't, it was so disappointing. When we finally got to the top we thankfully went down a different easy way but I was just jealous we didn't come up that way, would have saved a lot of energy. After that we had lunch and went walking again but this walk wasn't that much uphill and it was a lot more bearable than the "hike" before. We then got on the bus to go back to the school. We tried to have a snooze but didn't quite get to. Overall it was a good day for something different and I enjoyed the experience (even the uphill parts).

Trip to Museums in town

Yesterday we went into town in order to visit some museum exhibitions. The first one we went to see was an exhibition on W.B yeasts. It was quite interesting to learn about him, we found out there was a high chance that he was diclecsic which I found very interesting because he's so famous. We found out about his poetry and his personal life which was a bit mad. We found out he was pretty much obsessed with a lady called Maude Gonne, she was 6ft tall which was very unusual back then and he thought she was the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. He thought she was the love of her life so he proposed to her formally 5 times and informally more but she rejected him each time. Later in life he decided to ask her daughter to marry him but like her mother, she declined. I think it's pretty weird to ask a mother and her daughter to marry you but that's how he was. He finally married another woman with the same intrests as her but he thought he was just settling for her and still wanted Maude. Because of this his wife pretended spirits were saying Maude was not the love of his life, and Yeats was then happier in his marridge. To be honest he was a bit of a snob too, but very talented none the less.

After the W.B Yeats exhibition we went to the national museum where we mainly went to see the bog bodies. They showed us stone age and bronze age items too but we were more interested in seeing the bog bodies. We saw two bodies both preserved excellently. One of the bodies' hair was the most amazing thing about him was how perfect his hair was. The other man's hands were perfectly preserved. I was really impressesd by those.

The last place we went to was an art museum. The first paintings they showed us were paintings by Willam Yeats' brother Jack. We saw some realists paintings by him and then his style dramatically changed to expressionist paintings. It was interesting to see the dramatic differences in his style. We then saw paintings by other artists all over the world which were just as impessive but we didn't go into as much detail on those.
Overall we learned alot but had fun walking around town for the day.

Work Experience - March (7-11)

Last week we had our second and last work experience of ty. I went to the air coprps in Baldonnel. Before I went I was really nervous but I was lucky because my friend Rebekah came too so at least I wasn't by myself like alot of people there. There were about 32 of us in total there on work experience, it was just like a class. At first it was really awkward because everyone was nervous and quiet and Rebekah ani I were the only two girls there but after a while people started talking and a few more girls showed up.
I really enjoyed the week, it was more observing than doing but we understood, alot of the boys were very dissapointed though they didn't understand like we did ha. They showed us around the place in general on the first day and we looked at things in more detail over the week. They showed us all of the guns and weapons they use in the air corps. We also got to see all the planes and helicopters they have at the base. We got to go inside of the government jet that the new Taoiseach would be in later that day which was pretty cool. They showed us how they work and what pilots do in the cockpits and all sorts. They brought one of the fire engins around and told us about it and we all got to sit in it and look, they turned the hoses on aswell, it was good. One of the days we went up to thr bird control unit. There they showed us incidents like crashes of planes caused by birds and how they prevent it from happening. One way is to set a hawk out so all the other birds are scared and fly away. We got to hold one of these hawks and I held it first but it didn't like me! I was scared so I ran and screamed a couple of times but it was still fun.
They showed us a DVD of the work you have to do in the Curra when you're joining the army or the air corps it lo0oks really hard but really fun too. They told us about the fitness tests you have to pass to get into the army aswell. You also have to pass an interview and a test to make sure you're not crazy which I thought was pretty funny.
On the last day we got a talk from a Pilot and he told us all about how you become a pilot what you do and how much you get paid and everything. I wasn't interested in being a pilot before it but after hearing him it sounds like a great job with good pay and other benifits so now its something to consider :) The lunch was one of the best things about the whole week, it was great. If you brought in €2 you got a lunch which was really more like a dinner. You got a choice but most days I had chicken chips and neans and whatever salads too oh and a drink it was great.
Overall I really enjoyed this week it was my favourite work experience of the two by far and was alot of fun.

Mini Company

Yesterday, we went to Clane G.A.A. for our mini company competition to see who goes thorough to the next rounds for the county. We all got the bus there everybody was supposed to be given a board to put things about their company on but of course with our luck we were the only group not to get one. Instead we had to use an empty box of one of the boards and put it on top of two chairs, it worked quite well, it was quite the cunning plan if I do say so myself. We had a table too but because we had no board we decided to use two tables. We used lights and made it all pretty and our stand looked very well. We were waiting for hours to get judged, I actually think we were the last group to get judged. The man who judged us was very nice and we were able to answer all his questions. Unfortunately our group didn't get through but our school had the most groups shortlisted to go through which was impressive. Even though we didn't get through
it was still a good day and we got to see alot of brilliant companies.

Movement workshop

Today we had a man called Ian in to give us a workshop in movement. The aim of the workshop was to help us with our movement in our dramas because we are entering another drama competition (Festival to celebrate the work of Margaret Aylward).
The workshop was great made us do warm-ups like jumoing walking and shaking out our arms and legs etc. At the end he had us play a sort of game. We had to get into pairs and one of us were to make a shape while the other filled in the gaps making another shape and so on. He made us pick out two of our favourites shapes and switch from one to the other in a second. It was really helpful and it was good fun too.

Home Ec

As part of our home ecenomics project we had to cook a dish from a country of our choice. For our entire project Orlaigh & I chose to do Japan. We decided to cook the chinese chicken teriyaki. We were the fastest group to finish our dish, it only took about 20-30 minutes for the whole thing. We marinaded chicken fillets in teriyaki sauce chopped and fried it. We also served it with rice and a few vegetables. It was AMAZING! Because we were inished so early we had to go round and help other people in the class. We got to taste eat our food for a while aswell. I liked that alot :) Over all it was a very successful dish.

Drama trip to Mullingar

Two days ago we went to Mullingar to take part in the drama competition that we had been practicing in English. I played the part of a loving wife waiting for her husband top return from war in Iraq. My husband by the was was played by my dear ally Ruth Fitzmaurice. Our play was based on the poem "But you didnt" by Merill Glass. Our school entered four groups and every group did relly well. The adudicator gave us all great feedback and construcktive criticism and said she really liked our perfromances. When we had all finished we went for lunch and came back to watch three other dramas from other schools all over the counrty. They were very different to ours but i enjoyed them alot. The day was great fun and I really enjoyed it.

Rugby tournament

We went to the rugby tournament in a school in Tallaght. It was a fantastic day out. In the morning before we left I wasn't really looking forward to going and when we got there at first I didn't feel that different but when we got playing and supporting we had a blast. We got a good plan worked out and in the end Our team (the red team) won every single one of our matches, we didnt get a medal for winning but the pride was good enough for us. When everybody had finished we were all kindly given a Leinster rugby bag and t-shirt. I think it was definately a very worthwhile activity and I enjoyed it very much.

Young Scientist

When we went to the young scientist I wasn't expecting that much from the day. At first it wasn't that great but after a while it was brilliant. We took part in games, quizes and other activities and it was so much fun. As well as that everybody got loads of useful free stuff.
I played a dance game, a shooting game and a football kicking game I was good at the dance but no so great at the shooting and football. I saw alot of interesting things like a juggling show, I even got to touch a centipede it felt freaky but was worth it. The best and funniest part of the day was when we were all playing with a bouncing ball, somebody kicked it and it bounced right off of Mr. K's head, it was hillarious. Over all it was a funfilled enjoyable day and I learned alot from it too.

Dress up Day

Today was our Christmas themed dress up day. A couple of girls in my class and I dressed up as people from the nativity, I was a Shepard. We were chosen to represent our class in the parade at lunchtime. Unfortunately we didn’t win but the people who did definitely deserved to. All in all today was a fun day with a good atmosphere around the school

Pilates

Pilates

Today for P.E we had our first session of pilates with our instructor Angela. It was really good. She taught us how to stand and sit correctly so that your posture is perfect. We learned a couple of basic pilates excersizes and she also taught us how to breath correctly for pilates. I persomally really enjoyed it and found it really relaxing. I can’t wait till next week to do it again to relax and learn more pilates excersizes.

Podcasts

Today we had a podcasting session with two guys called Peter 7 Chris. They were really nice and were from Australia and so had really cool accents. They taught us how to create podcasts. We were split up into groups and told to make a podcast of our own. My group called our podcast “Teatastrophy”. It was hilarious. We all did different accents and I found it hard to get through my lines without laughing. It took a lot of editing to get rid of the laughter. At the end they played us all of the podcasts from our class. They were all great and had everyone in stitches. The day ended on a great high because of the podcasts and everyone was in a great mood.

Work Experience

I did my work experience in Hubu hair Salon. I was lucky as someone in my class also applied for their work experience there. We were given tasks such as; Folding towels, sweeping floors, washing surfaces, Making tea/coffee, Washing and drying dishes/equipment, drying towels, washing hair and giving the customers magazines etc. At first I was very nervous but as the days went by I got to enjoy it. I was working from 9-6 so it was more hours than I was used to and I was quite tired. When my work experience was done my supervisors very kindly gave me a voucher for a free student trim and blow dry. I can’t wait to use it now :)
